Apicoectomy in Birmingham, AL

An apicoectomy is a specialized endodontic procedure performed when a tooth continues to have problems after root canal therapy, giving it another chance to be saved rather than extracted. At Brookwood Endodontics Birmingham, this treatment may be recommended to address persistent infection or inflammation at the root tip that could compromise oral health if left untreated. The apicoectomy procedure is performed under local anesthesia to keep patients comfortable, with sedation available if needed. During the treatment, one of our endodontists will make a small opening in the gum to reach the root tip, then remove the inflamed or infected tissue along with a small portion of the root. Once the area is thoroughly cleaned, the end of the root canal is sealed with a biocompatible material to prevent reinfection. Depending on the complexity of the tooth, the procedure typically takes between 30 – 90 minutes, and patients can usually return home the same day.

An apicoectomy offers several benefits for patients whose teeth have not fully healed after root canal therapy, helping to preserve oral health and avoid extraction. Benefits of an apicoectomy include:

  • Saves the natural tooth from extraction
  • Removes persistent infection at the root tip
  • Relieves pain and discomfort caused by inflammation
  • Prevents infection from spreading to surrounding bone and teeth
  • Promotes long-term healing and stability
  • Restores normal function and comfort

Very professional, and kind staff. Comfortable from beginning to end.

I was just recently referred to Brookwood Endodontics for dental work I needed. I have to say I have had dental problems since I was a child and I have always hated since then to go to the dentist. Brookwood Emdodontics staff were very kind and professional and made me feel at home. After my Initial visit I received a phone call from a member of there staff the next day just checking in to see how I was doing, you don’t see this much from businesses these days they just take your money and do whatever service to say they did something then your out the door and on to the next victim. Great job Brookwood I will recommend to others. Thank you George Thomas.

I had a great experience. I was nervous everyone put me at ease. Dr. Edwards and her nurse Kailyn were do helpful making me feel better. The infection was so bad but they worked hard got me the correct meds. Already feeling better and office called first thing checking on me and reaction to meds. Not ooking forward to root canals but I know I'm in good hands. Would highly recommend everyone I came in contact with. Thanks for changing a scary situation into a calmer time.

The entire experience was wonderful from the warm smiles and greeting from the staff. Dr. Thomas was gentle, explained the entire time what to expect, listened, and does great work. One of the things I noticed most about him was how kind he was not only to his patient but to his staff.

An apicoectomy is typically recommended for patients who have already undergone root canal therapy but continue to experience persistent pain, swelling, or signs of infection around the treated tooth. You may also be a candidate if a conventional root canal retreatment is not feasible due to complex root anatomy or obstructions like crowns and posts that would be difficult to remove without damaging the tooth. Additionally, individuals with a fractured root or localized bone loss at the tip of the root are often ideal candidates for this procedure, as it allows our endodontists to directly address the issue and save the natural tooth. During a consultation with our team, we will evaluate your condition and recommend the most appropriate course of treatment.

If you’re still experiencing pain or infection after a root canal, apicoectomy surgery may be the solution to save your natural tooth and protect your oral health.
